Air Filter

Air filters are typically composed of various materials that work together to trap and remove airborne particles. The primary filter media can be made from synthetic fibers, fiberglass, cotton, or pleated paper. These materials are selected for their high filtration efficiency and ability to capture microscopic particles. Additionally, air filters may include supporting structures such as frames made of cardboard, metal, or plastic to provide stability and durability.

Working Principle of Air Filter

Mechanical Filtration

This is the most straightforward type of filtration, where particles are physically captured by a filter. As air flows through, particles that are larger than the spaces in the filter media get trapped. The smaller the gaps in the media, the finer the particles it can filter out.

Electrostatic Filtration

These filters use static electricity to attract and trap particles. As air passes through, an electrostatic charge is generated that captures particles, even those that might be too small for mechanical filters to catch. This type of filtration is effective for finer particulates.

Carbon Filtration

Activated carbon filters use a chemical adsorption process to remove gases and odours from the air. These filters are excellent at trapping volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odours, and certain chemicals by attracting and holding molecules on their surface.

High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filtration

HEPA filters are the gold standard for air filtration, capturing 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. These filters are highly effective at removing fine particles such as dust, pollen, and even some bacteria and viruses.

MERV Ratings and Filter Efficiency of Air Filter MERV

MERV 1-4: These are common standard filters that provide a basic level of filtration at low cost.

MERV 6-8: These filters provide good filtration and are commonly used in residential settings. They’re often made of pleated cloth or paper to provide more surfaces for capturing particles.

MERV 9-12: Mid-range filters like these are of relatively high quality and can capture very small particles of 1 micron or larger.

How to Install an Air Filter

First confirm the airflow direction indicated on the air filter frame, make sure the windward side of the filter is at the air inlet.

Ensure that the filter frame and the mounting frame are tightly fitted, and that there are no air leakage or air intake problems.

After the installation is completed, check the entire frame to see if there is any looseness or damage.

How to maintain a HEPA filter

The air filter should be inspected regularly, if there is clogging or airflow drop, the non-washable air filter should be replaced in time, and the washable air filter should be cleaned with a soft bristle brush or a low-pressure vacuum cleaner to clean the surface dust.

The replacement cycle of air filters generally ranges from 3-12 months. For domestic use, it generally depends on the frequency of application and the quality of air, and the accumulation of dust. For industrial and commercial use, it depends on the differential pressure gauge. If the pressure drop increases significantly, it means that the air flow has decreased and needs to be replaced in time.
